Kayak Deploys Tokutek’s TokuDB for MySQL Storage Engine

Tokutek announced that Kayak, a travel search site, announced it has deployed Tokutek’s TokuDB for MySQL storage engine to enable high speed analysis of visitor traffic.

“Speed and accuracy are core to the service Kayak offers the customer. We need to respond quickly to consumer requests for flights, accommodations, and travel packages,” said Paul Schwenk, SVP of Engineering, Kayak. “Tokutek’s indexing allows us to execute our workhorse queries across data and thereby provide a better user experience.”

“Kayak’s choice of Tokutek shows the increasing importance of indexing to website performance and the user experience,” said John Partridge, CEO of Tokutek. “Any high-traffic website that is performing complex clickstream analysis on live data requires indexing like Tokutek’s to keep up.”

Companies needing to perform clickstream analysis on live data are finding that ever increasing data rates, database sizes, and query complexity eventually strain MySQL’s capabilities. Until now, Tokutek said, the only way to handle the processing load without migrating to an entirely new RDBMS was to resort to performance- lowering workarounds such as aggregating data, partitioning it into smaller data sets, or dropping indexes
