pleased with the level of protection it has provided,” said David Jordan,
CISO of Arlington County. “As our infrastructure becomes more of a mix
between on-premise and off-premise offerings, we look forward to leveraging
these new delivery models for security and storage solutions.”

Afghanistan: How long until we know?

0 Comments | USA TODAY, December, 2009 | by Michael O”Hanlon and Bruce Riedel

Now that President Obama has announced his plan to “finish the job” in Afghanistan, how long might it be until we know if the new plan is working? The White House has talked about a sustained new level of effort for up to three years, but will it really take that long to know whether we have altered the momentum of the conflict?

In fact, by the middle of 2011 or so, we should know a great deal. Miracles are not likely, but major change should be visible. The simplest way to understand this is in the plan for improving Afghan security forces. While progress in the economy is clearly needed too, the first order of business is security.

Building an Afghan army and police force has accelerated already in recent years, and now the pace should pick up

Washington High football star Cedric Lousi excels despite difficult

0 Comments | Oakland Tribune, Dec 1, 2009 | by Carl Steward

TWO YEARS ago, Cedric Lousi was at football practice at Washington High when the horrible, unthinkable news was delivered. His father, also named Cedric, had died of a heart attack that afternoon while playing tennis.

Suddenly, a Huskies team that was gearing up for its big game against perennial power James Logan was devastated by tragedy. The elder Lousi, who was just 41, left behind his wife and five children. The oldest son, then a sophomore and very close to his father, took it the hardest. A promising future was quickly thrust into despair and uncertainty.

“I didn’t think it was real,” he said. “I didn’t feel like going to school anymore. I knew I had to, but I didn’t feel like doing much work when I did go, so I just sat there and didn’t really say much. I just waited for the time to pass.”

Lousi (pronounced LOH-see) not only missed his dad, the unexpected death created a precarious situation for the family, which had moved to the United States from New Zealand in 1999. The father was the sole provider, and he was in the process of trying to establish U.S. citizenship for himself and his family when he died. With little income and lacking citizenship, it looked as if the surviving family members would be deported back to New Zealand.

Fast forward to today. Lousi, now a senior, is a standout two- way player and team captain for Washington, which plays Pittsburg on Saturday night in the North Coast Section Division I semifinals. At 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds, he is being recruited by BYU, San Jose State and several other schools as a defensive end/tight end with a lot more going for him than just his football talent.

“He’s just one of the special individuals I’ve ever been involved with in youth sports, because beyond his skills as an athlete, he’s a young man who simply represents the good in people,” Washington coach Ken Wittmer said. “He is always the first one in the locker room on game day. He’s there to help me with anything I need. I’ve had three years of nothing but joy having the guy around. He’s just been raised very, very well.”

So what happened?

First, a number of people came to the aid of the Lousi family after the father’s death, notably parishioners from Fremont’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where the family attended. Washington High held a fundraiser, as well

SILVER SPRING, Md., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ — We are closer than ever before to reforming a health care system that ensures affordable, quality care for all. The American Nurses Association urges all Americans to contact their representatives and voice their support for meaningful health care reform.

See video from ANA at: http://inr.mediaseed.tv/ANA_37124/

Join ANA in advocating for a health care system that focuses on wellness and prevention, a high-quality public insurance option that complements and competes fairly with options offered by private insurers, and a national healthcare workforce policy which recognizes the vital role nurses play.

ANA remains committed to the principle that health care is a basic human right and that all persons are entitled to ready access to affordable, quality health care services. ANA supports a restructured health care system that ensures universal access to a standard package of essential health care services for all individuals and families. That is why ANA strongly supports the inclusion of a public health insurance plan option as an essential part of comprehensive health care reform.

As the largest group of health care professionals, nurses are uniquely positioned to advocate for and with their patients to achieve a health care system that provides safe quality care. Nurses see firsthand how important access to affordable quality health care is. They are witness to the tragedy of patients delaying care for financial reasons and the devastating impact it can have on their health and their families.

ANA believes that the time for reform is now. Help ANA achieve the goal of transforming the current “sick care” system into a true “health care” system.

Genzyme Begins Shipping Newly Produced Cerezyme from Allston Plant

Genzyme Begins Shipping Newly Produced Cerezyme from Allston Plant

Business Wire, Dec 01, 2009

Company provides update on product supply

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Genzyme
Corporation (NASDAQ: GENZ) announced today that it has begun
shipping vials of newly produced Cerezyme (imiglucerase for injection)
manufactured at its Allston Landing plant. The company also provided an
update on its progress to restore supplies of Cerezyme and Fabrazyme
(agalsidase beta) for patients worldwide.

The initial Cerezyme shipments will provide uninterrupted treatment for
the most vulnerable patients under the current supply conservation
guidelines. By the end of this month, Genzyme will expand shipments of
Cerezyme to patients worldwide who have experienced interruptions in
their treatment this year. The company expects that it can meet
anticipated worldwide demand and allow all patients to return to their
normal infusion and dosing regimen during the first quarter of next
year. Patients have been asked to contact their treating physicians for
information on the timing and process to re-start their infusion program.

Genzyme is also preparing to ship vials of newly produced Fabrazyme from
the Allston plant. The first two bioreactor runs of Fabrazyme have
completed their production cycles, and the output from these runs has
been at the low end of Genzyme experience. The company is currently
producing Fabrazyme at a rate of approximately 70 percent of anticipated
demand for 2010, and is intensively working to improve the productivity
of Fabrazyme manufacturing.

Genzyme will continue to ship 30 percent of Fabrazyme demand during the
first quarter of 2010 to ensure continued treatment for all patients and
to build inventory to begin shipping 70-100 percent of demand in the
second quarter. The range and timing of shipments depends on restarting
fill/finish for Fabrazyme at the Allston facility and on restoring the
overall productivity of Fabrazyme manufacturing
