Bowel cancer.. the early warning signs
Monday, November 23rd, 20090 Comments | Sunday Mirror, Nov 22, 2009 | by CATHERINE HOOD
AS A nation, we find it difficult to talk about our bowels. We are embarrassed about our own bodily functions when well and, when things go wrong, they are even harder to discuss. More than 36,000 men and women in the UK are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year. Many of those people will have suffered early symptoms of the disease for months before plucking up the courage to talk to their GPs. But early detection and diagnosis can save lives.
Who’s at risk? Bowel cancer kills one person every 30 minutes in the UK, and it’s the third commonest form of cancer. Both men and women can suffer but you need to be particularly vigilant if you’re over 50 or have a close relative who had the disease under the age of 45.
What to watch out for Everybody differs in their bowel habits

Oakland father and son have made dentistry a family affair
Monday, November 23rd, 20090 Comments | Oakland Tribune, Nov 19, 2009 | by Sara Stroud
Some might find it tough to have a profession that strikes fear in many people’s hearts.
Not Michael and Jeffrey Erickson. The father and son are both longtime Oakland residents– Jeffrey was raised in Montclair and delivered the Montclarion — who have collectively put in almost half a century fixing people’s teeth. And they say they’re doing their part to combat dental phobia while providing care to people who might otherwise go without.
At Creative Dimensions in Dentistry, the Castro Valley practice where Jeffrey Erickson practices dentistry, while his father — since putting down the drill — still helps out with paperwork, the dentists cater to some of the most dental-phobic patients.
The office offers sedation dentistry, in which patients are given a range of sedatives — from nitrous oxide gas to intravenous sedation — to get them through their procedures. The ultimate goal of the process is that patients will become more comfortable at the dentist and will eventually be able to get work done without sedation.
But even after getting past the fear, there’s an inherent challenge in being a dentist, they said.
“You have to convince people to do something they don’t want to do and then they have to pay for it,” said Michael Erickson, who started working at Creative Dimensions in 1969 and worked there until his retirement.
To put people at ease with the process, Jeffrey Erickson said he likens visiting the dentist to taking a car to the mechanic: It should be a back and forth conversation between doctor and patient, discussing the course of treatment.
While Jeffrey Erickson frequented his dad’s office as a child, he didn’t necessarily grow up wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps. But he decided he wanted to be in the health care industry and dentistry seemed an obvious choice. He has been a practicing dentist since 2003.
While some avoid going to the dentist because of fear and anxiety, financial considerations keep others out of the chair.
The Ericksons and the rest of the practice donate dental care to the underserved. In 2008, the practice closed for regular business for the day to provide free care to veterans through East Bay Stand Down, a program offering a host of services to veterans in need, from employment services to medical care.
The clinics’ dentists also provide services through the National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped Donated Dental Services program, which gives care to elderly and disabled patients who don’t receive public aid

George: I was totally sober
Sunday, November 22nd, 20090 Comments | Sunday Mail (Glasgow, Scotland), August 16, 2009
GEORGE MICHAEL last night insisted he was “stone cold sober” when he was arrested after a car crash.
The former Wham! star was questioned by police on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs in the early hours of Friday.
The 46-year-old singer was arrested after his silver Range Rover hit a lorry on the A34 in Berkshire around 1am. He was later released without charge.
In a statement, Michael said: “Neither of us was charged because we were both stone cold sober.
“We both think the other is to blame so this is just an insurance fight.”
Michael spoke out after Scots lorry driver Laurie Rowe claimed: “He seemed completely disorientated, like he had no idea what was going on.
“He even tried to climb into the cab of my lorry and kept saying he was worried he would go to jail.”
Rowe also claimed he saw the pop star’s car weaving from side to side seconds before the crash.
The singer was banned from driving for two years in June 2007 for driving while unfit through drugs.

3M Launches Consumer Awareness Campaign on TV Energy Consumption
Sunday, November 22nd, 20090 Comments | Wireless News, Nov 20, 2009
3M, a developer of technology platforms, reported that its Optical Systems Division announced that it has launched a consumer awareness campaign in an effort to raise awareness of household TV energy consumption and what to consider when purchasing an energy efficient TV.
Specifically, the company said it is hoping to provide information to consumers through the media to educate the public about energy efficient TVs and the issues surrounding TV power consumption in the home.
“In the U.S., consumers lack awareness and knowledge about advancements in TV energy efficiency, and how the decisions they make when shopping for a new TV could greatly reduce their power bills and leave less of a carbon footprint on our planet. Moreover, it’s also difficult for consumers to determine which TVs are the most energy efficient,” said Jim Bauman, VP of 3M’s Optical Systems Division. “Fortunately, there is a range of energy efficient TV technologies available, allowing consumers to reduce energy consumption in their TVs without sacrificing picture quality.”

Kayak Deploys Tokutek's TokuDB for MySQL Storage Engine
Sunday, November 22nd, 20090 Comments | Wireless News, Nov 21, 2009
Tokutek announced that Kayak, a travel search site, announced it has deployed Tokutek’s TokuDB for MySQL storage engine to enable high speed analysis of visitor traffic.
“Speed and accuracy are core to the service Kayak offers the customer. We need to respond quickly to consumer requests for flights, accommodations, and travel packages,” said Paul Schwenk, SVP of Engineering, Kayak. “Tokutek’s indexing allows us to execute our workhorse queries across data and thereby provide a better user experience.”
“Kayak’s choice of Tokutek shows the increasing importance of indexing to website performance and the user experience,” said John Partridge, CEO of Tokutek. “Any high-traffic website that is performing complex clickstream analysis on live data requires indexing like Tokutek’s to keep up.”
Companies needing to perform clickstream analysis on live data are finding that ever increasing data rates, database sizes, and query complexity eventually strain MySQL’s capabilities. Until now, Tokutek said, the only way to handle the processing load without migrating to an entirely new RDBMS was to resort to performance- lowering workarounds such as aggregating data, partitioning it into smaller data sets, or dropping indexes

Pounds 120-a-week rents in Westminster to get young workers on
Sunday, November 22nd, 20090 Comments | Evening Standard; London (UK), Nov 19, 2009 | by Ruth Bloomfield
YOUNG professionals struggling to get on the property ladder are being offered knock-down rents in some of London’s most sought after neighbourhoods.
In a groundbreaking Pounds 7 million scheme, Westminster council is targeting those who earn up to Pounds 30,000 a year but cannot put money aside for a deposit to buy a house because rents are so high. Tenants who sign up will pay heavily subsidised rents — up to 67 per cent off the market value. They will be expected to put aside the money they save for a deposit.
Flats will be let out to each person for a maximum of five years. Residents will also qualify for a Pounds 500 “incentive payment” each year if they stick to the terms of their tenancy agreement, collectable when they move out. They can only take advantage of the scheme once.
There is no obligation for tenants to put aside money each month, and nor do they have to spend their savings or bonus payments on buying a home.
The trial — the first of its kind — is open to single people earning up to Pounds 30,000 or couples who together earn Pounds 40,000. Priority will be given to council and housing association tenants, followed by people on the waiting list, Westminster residents, and those who work in the borough.
Westminster is buying 30 former council properties for the trial; tenants will be charged rents as low as Pounds 120 a week for period homes in areas such as Bayswater, Pimlico, Marylebone and Westbourne Park. That is less than a third of the Pounds 365 average market rent for one-bedroom flats in these areas. No tenant will pay more than Pounds 140 per week

THE BOY DAN GOOD!
Saturday, November 21st, 20090 Comments | Daily Mirror, The; London (UK), Nov 20, 2009 | by NICOLA METHVEN
SIMON Cowell last night caved in to Danyl Johnson and changed his song for this week’s show.
The stroppy drama teacher had a hissy fit and stormed out of rehearsals when asked to sing George Michael’s Praying For Time.
But after crisis talks Cowell agreed he could perform the star’s classic hit Careless Whisper.
And the X Factor judge brushed off their row as a “storm in a teacup” blaming 27-year-old Danyl’s meltdown on the pressure of competing for the top prize. He said: “The frustration got to him and he boiled over but when we talked it through he was as good as gold.
“It was always going to be one of those two songs and it turns out Danyl had set his heart on the other one.
“Danyl is now going to sing Careless Whisper on Saturday and it is an incredible version. We love it.”
Danyl ran off down Battersea High Street in South London on Wednesday after a bust-up about the track.
Last week’s loser Jamie Archer, who also had arguments with Cowell over song choices, said he had a long chat with the contestant after his walkout.
He added: “Sometimes you have a strong idea of what you want to do and it doesn’t match what the X Factor think is right. It can be very frustrating.
“It’s very high pressure, I don’t think anyone can ever understand what it’s truly like to be in that house.
“People will flare up from time to time. It is natural to think, ‘Oh my God, I need some time to myself’.”
A charity auction for two studio tickets to watch X Factor a week on Sunday have attracted bids of more than EUR11,000. Pilotlight, which helps charities grow, is behind the scheme. To bid visit www.pilotlight.org.uk
