Translating the language of the soda fountain

Nation’s Restaurant News, June 5, 2000 by Jane, Michael Stern

Long before coffee bars taught us “caffeiniacs” to be conversant in the nuances of “half-caf,” skim caramel macchiatos and venti triple mochas with 1-percent foam and a cinnamon sprinkle, the complexities of beverage-making were the province of the soda fountain.

There the well-schooled soda jerk expertly concocted green rivers and black cows, phosphates and French sundaes – tulip-shaped glasses filled with ice cream and topped with sauce and toasted cashews and classic egg creams.

The lexicon of the soda jerk, who originally was named for his ability to stylishly “jerk” the handle of a seltzer dispenser, is rare today. So what a thrill it is to hear the arcane soda-pop-culture language in use at such still-thriving fountains as Bauder’s in Des Moines, lowa; Saywell’s in Hudson, Ohio; and Zaharako’s in Columbus, Ind.

The fun of fountain lingo is its playfulness; many ice-cream dishes and drinks have fantastic names that invariably provoke a smile. Gus Napolous, proprietor of the 100-year-old Wilton Candy Kitchen in eastern lowa, explained to us with a wink and a smile that one of the regular items on his drink menu, a Hadacol–root beer and cola–originally was named because “they ‘hada call’ it something!” Beernsten’s candy store in Manitowoc, Wis., offers such evocative sundaes as a Scotch lassie, which is a butter-scotch and marshmallow topping on vanilla ice cream with pecans, and a hog ‘n’ dog, which is made up of vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, chocolate sprinkles and a cherry. It is garnished with a solid chocolate pig and a solid chocolate dog. At the Green Gables restaurant in Sioux City, Iowa, the menu lists an H-bomb, which is an extra-lush soda; a Goshawful Gooey, which is gobbed with a flow of marshmallow sauce; and a Harem Share’m, which involves ice cream, syrup, bananas and a pyrotechnical flourish of blue flame.

Nearly every soda fountain that is serious about its ice-cream prowess has one top-of-the-line dish that is meant to challenge the most voracious appetite. Those multiscoop, multisauce concoctions, served in bowls better classified as troughs, are generally given names befitting their grand nature. At the Parkside Candy shop in Buffalo, N.Y., an eight-scoop, four-topping, two-kinds-of-nuts “share it with a friend!” monstrosity is named The Old Granada Special. At Cole Drug in Big Timber, Mont., only one bowl in the house is capacious enough to hold The Big Timber Sundae, a creation of nine scoops of ice cream, six toppings, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry.

Proprietary local names notwithstanding, even the simplest soda fountain terminology can get confusing because some common words have different meanings in different parts of the country. New England is especially challenging. The fundamental combination of ice cream, milk and syrup blended smooth in a silver beaker goes from being called a milk shake to a cabinet around Providence, R.I. And as you get closer to Boston, it becomes a velvet or a frappe. When you ask for a milk shake down east of Narragansett Bay, you probably will get a glass of milk mixed with flavored syrup, but without any ice cream at all.

To further complicate matters, even the name for soft drinks is not universally shared

Look over the Internet for

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Look over the Internet for reports or information on the company, and from other people who have lent money from them.

Be very wary of payday loan companies that ask for a fee before forwarding money to the borrower, and avoid giving out bank account numbers. Borrowers should opt for wire transfers from western union rather than give out bank account numbers and details as they run the risk of a fraudulent company accessing their accounts and creating further money problems. Some payday loan companies are scams, and the borrower lends money at their own risk, so care does need to be taken to choose legitimate companies.

The best way to deal with a payday loan company is to understand how their fees and charges work. Know exactly how much it is going to cost you to borrow the money, and what will happen if you can’t pay it back after payday. Be very choosy with payday loan companies, some offer you a better deal than others.

If you can be flexible and open

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

If you can be flexible and open to new things in regards to your destinations, you have the opportunity of taking whichever is cheap. Thus, you will often save lots of money.

Here is one example: You?re going to South America, where rum will be incredibly cheap and other types of alcohol will be fairly pricey. You don?t really like rum, but in this situation, you do when you?re in the country.

5. Consider the value of staying put for a while.

Traveling doesn?t always mean the flight to your destination. You will not only have huge savings on transportation and accommodation, but also take pleasure in far more exciting and valuable occasions and experiences.

Of course it is very tempting to try and see as much as possible in a foreign country by constantly moving. But, it?s dubious that you will also get a good sense of what the country is like. If you?re willing to stay for a while, for instance by renting an apartment for a few weeks in a particular city, you can experience the culture a bit more, meet and indulge with some locals, dine in local restaurants, and of course, save more money.

So, have you decided where you want to go now? Have you checked out the flights and the prices? Hope you enjoy your traveling!

Satisfaction could actually be found

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Satisfaction could actually be found in removing a photo from the bulletin board. This is an action that hurts no one but allows the teen to express their own anger.

Bulletin boards are not just for girls. Many of my friends have teen boys and I?ve seen bulletin boards in their rooms also. Boys tend to put magazine photos on bulletins more than any other item. These photos are often of motorcycles, cars or the latest video game information.

When my younger daughter went to an out of state summer camp, she prepared a bulletin board here at home and packed it in her suitcase to take with her.

When my oldest daughter left for college, she brought lots of items to put on the large bulletin board that was already in place in her new dorm room. Even colleges know that teens love bulletin boards.

Next time your teen asks about redoing their room, suggest bulletin boards!

It is important

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

It is important that you separate the events that need to be done from the events that you can do tomorrow.

Creating a list of priorities is essential in maintaining good time management. If you follow the proper schedules and routines you should become effective with your time. The most important thing you have to do is stick with your plan. If you find that is too difficult to do, you might want to consider readjusting it, for it might be too unrealistic. If you keep good time management skills, your life in general will become more relaxed and less stressful. Overall, good time management skills are an essential quality in life.

Inquire with any

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Inquire with any other medical associations that might reflect the doctor?s practicing specialty. You might garner some additional information for the medical background check.

How can you put a limit on learning more? The next section may contain that one little bit of wisdom that changes everything.

Internet search engines can also shed some light in your quest for a medical background check. Just type in the doctor?s name as well as city or state and see what kind of search results you receive. You might pull up articles the doctor has written, a biography on the doctor office?s or hospital?s website or even media releases about the activities of the doctor like community work or lawsuit for malpractice.

Criminal records should also be searched as part of the medical background check. What those records reveal could make a drastic impact on your choice of medical practitioners and hospitals. Has your doctor ever been arrested? How about convictions? Did they ever serve time in jail for a felony or misdemeanor? If so, what were the charges? Was it drug-related? Maybe medical malpractice played a part in a patient?s death.

Today, culinary arts

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Today, culinary arts have grown to extreme heights. But all these came to be because of years of hard work and deep passion for cooking.

Historic backgrounds on culinary arts can be traced back to the 1800?s. Boston Cooking School, the first American cooking school, made its mark when it taught students the art of American cooking. The first cookbook written in 1896 by a student in the same school, Fannie Merrit Farmer made it as part of the historic backgrounds on culinary arts. The cookbook is still being used as a reference up to this date.

A series of historic backgrounds on culinary arts followed after a couple of years. The year 1946 signaled a new evolution in the teaching technique. James Beard?s regular American cooking lessons on TV earned him the moniker ?the grandfather of the American cuisine?. The historic backgrounds in culinary arts have never been more significant than the founding of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) on the same year. The institution is the country?s first school to offer career-based courses on cooking.

Julia Child invaded American kitchens through the radio in 1960.

The biggest cost of

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

The biggest cost of owning a wood and coal furnace is the initial purchase; however, that purchase can quickly pay for itself in the money that you will be saving. The best way to decide if a wood and coal furnace would be beneficial to your home is by weighing the pros and cons of all heating methods. Once this is done it is likely that you will see the benefits of owning a wood and coal furnace.

Once the decision has been made to purchase a wood and coal furnace you will need to find out where they are sold. There are a number of home heating stores or home improvement stores that sell these furnaces. Making a purchase from a department store is easy to do; however, you may be missing out on other furnaces. The size of a retail store often prevents a wide variety of items from being sold.

When a car?s transducer

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

When a car?s transducer contains strong magnets, then that car speaker system will have a powerful car speaker. The strong magnets easily pick-up all of the electrical signals and convert them into a strong and audible sound. When a car owner upgrades the car speaker system, then the car owner can request stronger magnets in the system?s transducer.

Now review again the role of the car speaker. The transducer converts the electrical energy into sound energy. Using the speaker cone, the car speaker sends that sound energy out into the air. In other words the speaker produces the sound. In light of the importance of the car speaker system, the car owner should hesitate to question the need for a regular upgrading of that car speaker system.

By the same token no car owner should push for a fast and haphazard upgrade of the car speaker system. The speakers need to be paired with either a receiver or an amplifier. Therefore the individual performing the upgrade must make sure that any new speakers have a power rating that matches with either the receiver or the amplifier.

You will have to get hired

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

You will have to get hired first before you can take the Series 7. The good news is you can take a few other exams that can enhance your resume and these can be taken by individuals (no sponsorship necessary). They Include:

Series 65 Exam – Registered Investment Advisor

The Series 65 license looks terrific on a resume and does not require a sponsor to sit for it. The license itself allows a person to charge fees for giving investment advice.

Series 63 Exam – Uniform State Law Agent

The Series 63 is normally a required license and this can be taken as an independent. You can register to solicit business in other states with a Series 63. A big plus on a resume as well.

Series 3 Exam – Futures and Commodities

Although most firms do not engage in big futures business, you don’t know what your eventual firm does – so, it may be a useful license.
